This past Sunday, July 1st, the First Presbyterian Church of Buffalo had the honor of celebrating the 87th birthday of our beloved Reverend John Long, D.D., Parish Associate for Community Outreach. The congregation sang a heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday” during the worship service, and Rev. Leslie offered a touching tribute to Reverend Long's enduring commitment to social justice and his significant contributions to our community.

Reverend John Long has long been a beacon of hope and compassion within our church and beyond. Known for his unwavering dedication to social justice, Reverend Long has spent many years championing the rights and well-being of those in need. His tenure as the director of Vive, an organization dedicated to assisting asylum seekers and refugees, is a testament to his tireless work. Vive has been a sanctuary and a last resort for those seeking safety and a new beginning, and much of its success is due to Reverend Long's leadership and vision.

During the worship service, Reverend Leslie praised Reverend Long for his lifelong commitment to helping others. "John is known as a champion of social justice," she remarked, highlighting his impactful work with refugees and his steadfast advocacy for human rights.

Reverend Geri Lion also shared his admiration for Reverend Long, stating, "You are such a faithful member of our community. Your preaching, sharing of wisdom during staff meetings, and efforts to keep this church connected to the greater church have been invaluable." Reverend Lion's words echoed the sentiments of many within our congregation who have been inspired by Reverend Long's dedication and wisdom.

Reverend Long's impressive academic achievements further underscore his commitment to his faith and service. He received his Master's degree from Yale University and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Jesus the Liberator Seminary, reflecting his deep theological understanding and his lifelong commitment to social justice.
