First Presbyterian Church of Buffalo will say goodbye to its Pastor, the Reverend Dr. Geri Lyon, on Sunday, June 27, 2010, at the 11:00 a.m. worship service. Rev. Lyon will be preaching, and the title of her sermon is “Coming Full Circle.” She was the first female pastor called to this historic congregation. First Presbyterian Church, founded in 1812, was the first faith community in Buffalo.
Rev. Lyon, in her 10th year of ministry at First Presbyterian Church, is retiring, but remaining in the area. During her tenure, she envisioned the church as both inside and outside the walls of the building. Preaching a prophetic gospel, Rev. Lyon saw Christ in the marginalized, and worked for a fully inclusive church. She championed the needs of refugees, and was instrumental in establishing the church’s literacy and after-school programs. Rev. Lyon helped to facilitate the consolidation of First Presbyterian Church and Central Presbyterian Church, in 2008, and with her late husband, Dr. Carmine A. Grande, introduced a planned giving program for the congregation. Prior to her current pastorate, Rev. Lyon served as the Director of Pastoral Care at AIDS Family Services, in Buffalo, from 1995-2000.
Friends are invited to attend the worship service at 11 a.m., and the reception to follow. For more information please call 884-7250 ext 10.
